One day, not a universal schedule

The daily routine with the dog or the cat

Similar hours for water, food, and quiet help a person see what has changed. They are not portions, miles, or a timetable copied from another household. Your animal, their age, and what the clinic said stay above this page.

Morning: the water and a look

Change the water and wash the bowl. Do not measure “how much” a dog in general should drink. Note whether they drink much more or much less than in their own week. Food, at the hour they already know, comes from the instruction you have, not from a standard cup published here.

For a cat, clean the litter box before you leave. A full box changes behavior and no longer shows you whether the problem is the box or something else. Look briefly at the eyes, the walk to the bowl, and the energy with which they enter the room. Thirty seconds, not a medical exam.

Midday: movement and a pause

For a dog, the walk or the play this household already knows as suitable for them. Do not take miles from the internet. For a cat, many accept a short interval of play and a higher place, if the window is safe, as described in the predictable house.

Sleep during the day is not a problem to solve. An animal that is sleeping does not have to be woken to “do something.” Rest is part of the day.

Two hands hold a white bowl and a packet of dry kibble, against a beige background.
A feeding moment. The amount and the variety belong to the animal and the clinic, not to a recipe on the site.

Evening: a second look

Check the water again. For a dog, the evening walk is also the moment you see whether they limp or pull to one side. For a cat, pass by the litter box once more. Then leave a quiet period, without guests and without loud noise beside the bed, if the day was already full.

Write one sentence: “ate as yesterday,” “stayed under the bed,” “limped after the stairs.” The sentence is the reference for the page about stress. Without it, the next day everything looks sudden.

Night

The door to the outside is closed. The tilted window is closed. The water bowl stays down, not lifted “so it does not spill.” If the animal walks at night, a small light in the hall helps you see the door, not to watch them.

A kitten sleeps on its back, with its paws raised.

Once a week

Do not pile everything onto Sunday. Choose one check and do it.

  • The collar and the tag, in the light. Details in identification.
  • Nails: if you have not already learned how they are trimmed on this animal, ask for a demonstration at the clinic. Do not follow a generic clip. You can cut too short.
  • Weight: a hand on the ribs, or the scale, if you have one. A rapid change is told to the clinic. We do not start a diet from here.
  • The profile photograph, if the appearance has changed. See the sheet.

When you leave for a few days, leave the person who stays the meal times, the amount you use, and the clinic's number. Do not leave only a bag of food and a key. If the animal is not in the house at the hour they should be, open first hours.

A day with the dog, as a reference

Morning: fresh water, the meal they know, a trip outside before you leave. At midday, if they stay alone for many hours, leave water and a shaded place, not only an empty bowl “until evening.” Afternoon: the walk on the known route, not a new park on a day they were already unsettled. Evening: a second look at the paws, the ears, and whether they ate. One sentence in the notes is enough: “drank a lot” or “refused the corner by the building.”

We do not publish miles or “correct” minutes. An old dog and a puppy do not share the same route. If they pant in the house, without having run, do not lengthen the walk so they “get tired.” Note it and call the clinic if it repeats. More observations are in signs of stress.

A day with the cat, as a reference

Morning: a clean litter box, water, the bowl in its place. Many cats eat a little and often. If you switch suddenly to one large meal, the change shows up in behavior and no longer tells you whether they are ill. At midday, if you are away, leave several water points, not only one beside the noise of the washing machine. Evening: check whether they used the litter box and whether they stayed only under the furniture.

A few minutes of play, with a toy they can leave, stands in for a “walk.” Do not force them onto the balcony. The window and the screen are in the house. A day without eating at all, in a cat, is worth a call to the clinic sooner than in an adult dog that skipped a meal.
