When they are not in their place

The first hours when the animal does not come back

If a dog or a cat is not in its usual place, the first hour is for small checks and a note. This page puts the steps in an order. It does not say the animal will be found.

Write down the time and the last safe place

Before you go out, write four things on the phone or on paper: the time you noticed the absence, the last place you saw the animal, who was home, and whether a door, a window, or a gate was open. These four lines stop the later circular argument, when nobody remembers whether it was 6:10 or 7:40.

If the animal usually goes out and comes back, also note how late they are against their own time, not only the clock. A dog missing from the evening walk and a cat that has not come to the litter box are different situations. The page does not mix them into one scenario.

Search the house before you widen the area

Many dogs and many cats stay close: under the bed, behind the washing machine, in a cupboard left ajar, on a balcony, behind a curtain. A loud shout and running through the house can push a frightened animal farther away. Move slowly, say the name in the usual tone, and look in the low places, not only at eye level.

In an apartment building, the hall, the stairwell, and the landings you are allowed to use are worth a round before the street. Do not enter someone's apartment or yard without permission. You can knock and you can leave a description.

  • Cupboards, boxes, the bathtub, the washing machine.
  • The balcony and windows that tilt open.
  • The parked car, if the animal has climbed into it before.
  • The place where they usually sleep, even if it looks empty at first glance.

The immediate area, not the whole city

After the house, the useful area is the one the animal knows: the stairs, the yard, the bush by the entrance, the corner where you stop on a walk. A frightened animal often stops in the first enclosed place, and does not run in a straight line. That is why a short round, repeated on the same nearby streets, can be clearer than one long trip.

At night, a flashlight held low, not in the eyes, helps with colors and with a collar. If you are in the roadway, stay visible. The page does not ask you to search roads without a sidewalk.

Animals seen outside are not, by themselves, animals missing from home. Your description needs to be more precise than “a dark-colored dog.”

Two sentences for a neighbor

A neighbor remembers little. Prepare two sentences: the species, the color, the approximate size, whether they wear a collar, and where they were last seen. Add a photograph taken in daylight, of the whole body, not only a close-up from an odd angle. How the sheet is put together is in the pet profile.

Also say what the animal does when it is afraid: hides, runs, approaches strangers, or will not be picked up. This detail changes how someone tries to approach and can avoid a chase that drives them farther away.

Whom you tell

Start with the people in the building or in the houses next door. Then, if the animal already has a clinic where it is known, you can tell them it is missing: some clinics accept animals brought in by passersby, others do not. There is no single number that works in every city for shelters or for the local animal service. Use your own town's directory, not a phone number copied from a foreign site.

If the animal has a microchip, you need the number and the registry where your phone is listed. A microchip does not show a dot on a map. The details are in the note about the collar, tag, and microchip.

What gets in the way in the first hours

  • Assuming that any similar photograph on the internet is your animal. Compare the stable marks: a patch, an ear, a scar you know.
  • Leaving food beside a busy street. A blanket or a bowl of water can stay at your entrance, not in the roadway.
  • Offering a large reward on the spot. If you mention one, keep it modest. Meet people in a public place and do not hand over money before you see the animal and recognize it.
  • Entering a closed property. Leave the description and your number.

A one-page log

On each round, add the time, the street or the room, and whom you spoke with. The log does not find the animal. It helps you not to walk the same hall three times while leaving the back yard unchecked, and it gives you a summary if you speak later with a shelter.

Keep the printed profile or the phone album next to the log. If the battery dies, the paper remains. One copy can stay in a drawer, not only in the pocket you left with.

When the situation is about health

If you know the animal was injured, is very young, has been in extreme heat or cold, or is breathing with difficulty at the moment you see them, call a veterinary clinic and describe what you observe. This page cannot judge an emergency. Do not write to petlostboost for an interpretation of symptoms. Our address is for texts and for how the site works, as stated on contact.

If the animal comes back on their own, note the time and look at the gait, the paws, and the appetite in the hours that follow. A change from their usual way is a reason to call the clinic, not to look for a conclusion in an article. For day-to-day observations, see signs of stress and the routine.

A dog and a cat do not go missing in the same way

Dog

A dog that goes out for a walk has a route. Start with the gate, the leash left on the hook, and the corner where you usually stop. If they wear a harness, tell the neighbor the color of the harness, not only “they have a collar.” A frightened dog often presses against a fence or enters the first open yard. Do not run after them in the street: a person who runs pushes them farther. Sit down, say the name in the home tone, and let them come.

If they only go out on a leash, their absence usually means a door or a gate. Check the car, especially if they have climbed into it before. Do not leave the window cracked “a little” while you search the rest of the house.

Cat

Before the street, open the cupboards, look under the bed and behind the washing machine. Many cats stay in the building: the stairwell, the basement, the box by the elevator. A long shout on the stairs makes them go quiet. Better to put a blanket that smells like home at your door and pass by again after an hour.

An indoor cat that has gone out for the first time stops nearby, under a car or in a bush. Do not reach under the car if you cannot see the whole body. Leave a bowl of water by your entrance, not in the middle of the street.

What you put in the bag before you go out

  • The charged phone and a photograph of the whole body, not a filtered close-up.
  • A leash or a carrier, if the animal lets you come close. Do not use it to chase them.
  • A paper with two sentences: color, size, collar, last place. The model is in the profile.
  • A flashlight held low, in the evening. Do not point it at the eyes.

When the animal comes back, note the time and look at the gait, the paws, and the appetite in the hours that follow. A change from their way is a reason to call the clinic, not to look for a conclusion here. If they were outside in heat or frost, tell the veterinarian. The petlostboost address is not an emergency line: for texts, the contact page.
